Bio-oil

Bio-oil, also known as pyrolysis oil, is a water-soluble emulsion resulting from rapid condensation of vapors produced by oxygen starved thermal decomposition of biomass. This fuel can be mixed with diesel fuel to reduce diesel dependence and emissions.

The bio-oil group develops techniques to produce and upgrade bio-oils from Southern forestry and agricultural feedstocks so as to render them suitable for utilization as fuels and chemicals. Compromised of faculty in the departments of agricultural and biological engineering, chemisty, chemical engineering, forest products, mechanical engineering, and the Institute for Clean Energy, this thrust area aims to increase the number of bio-oil specialists, as well as establish a bio-oil industry in the Southeastern United States.
