Lignocellulosic Conversion

The objective of this thrust is to produce single cell oil (i.e. triglycerides) from lignocellulosic sugars. The microorganisms convert sugars such as glucose and xylose into oil, which has almost twice the energy content of ethanol. This oil can then be converted into biodiesel or green diesel depending on where the oil is generated, as well as economic factors.

The lignocellulosic conversion group works to reduce the cost per gallon of single cell oil from lignocellulose to levels competitive with wholesale prices of crude by developing a fundamental understanding of these processes and increasing the number of experts in this area within the state of Mississippi.
